Esteemed Music Educator and Mentor

I am Mrs. Mahalakshmi Ramachandran, who has been teaching carnatic music for the past 50 years because of the Almighty’s grace.

I have done my music graduation from Stella Maris college, Madras and further did my post graduations M.A and M.Phil from the Madras University and Pune university respectively. My early musical training was given by my mother Smt.Mangalam Sarma and then I followed it up with classes from the illustrious Tiruvarur sisters. D.K.PATTAMMAL Style was transmitted by them by them.

My father, Sreevatsa. Jayarama Sarma a great exponent of Narayaneeyam was instrumental in developing the Raga Jnana in me. He used to take me with him as an accompanying artist during his stage programmes. This was my daily routine during my formative years. My teaching experience is something which I cherish the most.

Spanning over 50 years, my teaching has given me immense pleasure and a great satisfaction that I have shared atleast a handful of water from the great ocean of carnatic music.

With my students, I am so thankful to the Almighty that this teaching is still continuing with the same tempo. I have been blessed to receive quite a number of awards which are as follows:

• 1972 – Rama Pannikar medal
• 2017 – Surenandan Bharaty Title
• 2024 – Lifetime award by Rasikapriya of Vadodara, picture above
